Melodee Au, AMFT

I am a registered Associate Marriage and Family Therapist who has provided clinical psychotherapy services for adults, couples, teens, and children in a variety of settings in the Bay Area.

I received my Master’s in Counseling Psychology with a concentration in Community Mental Health from the California Institute of Integral Studies in 2022, and then completed a two-year postgraduate fellowship in psychoanalytic psychotherapy from Access Institute for Psychological Services where I provided therapy at their clinic in San Francisco.

I also provided school-based therapy services for four years for children at public elementary schools in San Francisco and the East Bay.

In my previous professional life, I worked in nonprofit mental health program management for ten years at San Francisco Suicide Prevention, the Mental Health Association of San Francisco, and the California Association of Mental Health Peer-Run Organizations. I also taught and tutored undergraduate and graduate students in academic writing at the California Institute for Integral Studies, and facilitated writing workshops for these students.

I have continued to train and present on community mental health, crisis intervention, peer support services, and topics related to psychoanalysis for other mental health professionals and students, and am currently an adjunct faculty member at Access Institute and an adjunct instructor for the Integral Counseling Psychology program at the California Institute of Integral Studies.

My professional affiliations include:

California Association of Marriage and Family Therapists

Northern California Society for Psychoanalytic Psychology

San Francisco Center for Psychoanalysis

Psychoanalytic Institute of Northern California

Policies and Fees

Fees

I provide an initial free 15-20 minute consultation for you to see if I might be a good fit for what you are looking for in a therapist.

My fees are $180 for individual 50 minute sessions, and $200 for 50 minute couples sessions.

I am not in-network with any insurance companies, however, I am able to provide an itemized superbill as an out-of-network provider.

I provide a limited number of sliding scale spots for people in need of lower fees in order to make therapy services accessible for a broader range of people. Please inquire if you believe you may qualify.

Cancellations

You will be able to receive the most benefits from your therapy if we are able to establish and maintain a consistent, regular time for you and I to meet each week. Therefore, I require 48 hours of notification for any cancellations, otherwise you will be charged for the full rate of your missed session. If we are able to reschedule for another time during the same week, then you will not be charged. Rescheduling is dependent on both of our schedules. If we are not able to find another time for us to meet that week, then you will be charged for your missed session.

Initial Sessions

The first three sessions are for us both to get a better sense of what challenges you are facing and how I can best potentially help and support you. After these first three sessions, we will make a plan and determine together how your treatment will proceed.

Families

For children receiving therapy, I will meet with the child’s caregiver(s) prior to meeting with the child for one or two sessions to learn more about your family’s history and current circumstances. Afterwards, we will establish at minimum monthly times where caregivers and I will meet to discuss treatment progress and for updates on what is happening at home, school, or elsewhere.

For teens, I will establish regular meetings with caregivers based on what makes sense for your individual family circumstances.

If additional services are indicated in the form of psychological assessment, psychiatric evaluation, or school support, then we will discuss and coordinate that to best support your child.

No Surprises Act

You have the right to a “good faith estimate” of what your therapy services will cost you if you are entering into treatment with me. If your therapy services exceed $400 more than your good faith estimate, then you are entitled to dispute the bill. For more information regarding your right to a good faith estimate, please visit https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises.

Telehealth

I offer video sessions for those who prefer to meet remotely. We will establish the suitability of remote services for your treatment before we meet. I use a fully HIPAA-compliant platform to conduct remote sessions. Should you choose to meet with me remotely, I ask that you be sure that you have a secure wi-fi connection and are able to meet from a private space with minimal distractions to ensure your confidentiality.
